Message From David Gabriel:
Signs have been posted over the years advertising our policy concerning
keeping dogs under control and cleaning up after them. They have been
routinely ripped down as was the case recently.
Our association cannot act as police to enforce this legitimate and
reasonable policy but everyone must accept that it is the policy of the CBRM
and the Baille Ard Recreation Association. If there are incidents caused by
an uncontrolled dog, all concerned must understand our position.
Recently someone has painted markers on trees along the trails. If you know
anything about this could you let me know.

SUBJECT:"The Canadian Volkssport Federation, 24th Annual General Meeting and Convention 2010,coming to Cape Breton!!!
Over the past several walk events it has been proposed to bring the convention to Cape Breton Island and more specifically to CBRM-Sydney.
During these short meeting at the walk events there was a lot of enthusiasm to bring the convention here, now we need your help to setup committees, make proposals on how to do it.
Your input and volunteer efforts will be the backbone of this proposal to make this a successful event.
Immediately after this meeting we must make a formal announcement to the CVF Board of Directors for their approval. No other organizations have come forward to hold the convention for 2010.
Normally the next convention would have been announced during the ongoing convention however this past year no clubs came forward to host the 2010 convention.
The CVF Board of Directors has designated the weekend of 28-30 May 2010 as the General Meeting therefore we will hold the convention as per these dates.
We need walk committees, entertainment, banquet, meet and greet, registration committees and more. Help us to show off this great island. Lets make it #1 and not #3 of the most beautiful Islands in the world, according to Leisure Magazine.
A post convention tour of the Highlands may also be considered.Please pass on this information to members you know who do not have email. Thank You!

Baille Ard Nature Trail Walk and Talk

In another of Baille Ard Recreation Association's summer series of nature walks, David McCorquodale will visit the trails to discuss bird life. David is a Professor with the Biology Department at Cape Breton University and has researched the changes in bird populations on Cape Breton Island. He contributes to the monthly Bird Hour on CBC Cape Breton radio.
The Baille Ard Trail - 14 acres of mixed forest and brooks - is located in the south end of Sydney. Meet in the parking lot at the end of Terrace Street, adjacent to the SPEC soccer field (far end).

The lighthouse Walk Event at Louisbourg will take place on Sunday June 28th.

Due to the number of walkers/participants expected for this event we will meet at the parking lot for the former S.N.E. Sea Products, located on Main Street, Louisbourg.
This is about 300 meters from Peck's Store; Peck's is the official Volunteer location for our Year Round Event in Louisbourg. Please support our official Start Point Locations!
Visitors to the island please note from Hwy 125, proceed on to Hwy 22 to the Community of Louisbourg (25-30 Minutes to Louisbourg) where Hwy 22 terminates.
The Louisbourg Lighthouse Event is also a registered Canadian Volkssport Federation National Cenotaph/War Memorial Walk Event for those who participate in this event.
The following message was sent out by David Gabriel, President of the Baille Ard trail Society.
Hopefully some of our members can come out and support this worthwhile endeavor to help restore the trail to a more safe condition.

David Gabriel's Message:
The trails were extensively damaged by flooding this week. Two bridges were
dislodged and a considerable amount of gravel was washed away. In their
present condition, sections of the trail are not safe.
However, all of the damage can be repaired by volunteer effort. The
positive in volunteering is that it will provide trail users an opportunity
to contribute in a real way to their upkeep. To do what has to be done we
will need people to come out in numbers! .
Initially, I suggest we come out Saturday morning between 9 am and noon.
Our first jobs will be to return the bridges to their places and to shovel
any gravel that hasn't been too badly displaced back on to the trail. After
that we can use the gravel we have stockpiled to repair as much as we can.
Based on what we do Saturday we can plan other sessions and order stone.
Please contact any trail users that may not be on our list. If you don't
feel physically capable of being involved in the work, consider approaching
a friend or relative who is. Remember that you are the beneficiary of the
trails being in good repair.
Volunteers will need a wheelbarrow (borrow one if need be) and a shovel

What lies beneath…and above! There’s more going on in Baille Ard Nature Trail than first meets the eye. To mark International Trails Day, Baille Ard Recreation Association is hosting a walk on Sunday, 7 June at 10:00AM. Join ACAP Cape Breton specialists, Wayne Williams and Stephanie Johnstone, as they talk about life in the Trail’s streams and the vibrant ecology of this beautiful 14 acre mixed forest trail located in the south end of Sydney.

THE CEILIDH TRAIL MEANDERS ALONG THE MABOU RIVER PARALLEL TO HIGHWAY 19, WALKERS HAVE A CHOICE OF GOING NORTH OR SOUTH ALONG THIS QUAINT AND PEACEFUL TRAIL. ON A QUIET DAY YOU MAY HEAR A DISTANT PIPER IN THE GLEN.
Come join the Cape Breton Island Hoppers and Pathways Cape Breton for International Trails Day Saturday 06 June 2009 at Mabou River Inn, South West Ridge Road in Mabou.
Please note that we will be sharing the trail and the day with our friends from Pathways Cape Breton.
Pathways will be organizing a bicycle tour for the local children and visitors.
These walk events will take place on the Trans Canada/Ceilidh Trail.
Nova Scotia Natural Resources have confirmed that this trail is open for all activities. The ban on trails in the Mabou area only affects the Mabou Hills/MacKinnon Brook Trails that are located to the North West of Mabou along the western coast of Cape Breton.
There will be two walk events during the day with two separate IVV award stamps for this occasion.
The Start Point for the two walk events will begin at the parking lot at Mabou River Inn just below the "Lady of Sorrows Shrine".
The first event registration starts at 09:30 AM and we step off at 10:00 AM.
Participants have a choice of a 5k or 10k walks in the morning and in the afternoon.
Depending on the trail conditions and the direction that the bicycle group from Pathways will follow, we will be going in the opposite direction along the Ceilidh Trail.
On the second walk event of the day, we will step off at at 2:00 PM and Registration for this event will begin at 1:30 PM going in the opposite direction of the morning walk.
TRAIL RATINGS:
The CBIH walk schedule Rates these Events as 2B and 1B, in fact both walks are on the same trail going in opposite directions and the Pathways Trails committee have been working on these trails and they should now be RATED AS 1A.
PICNIC tables are available at the Start Point for those walkers wanting to bring along their own picnic basket or take in lunch at a local Restaurant. Make a day off it in Mabou, you can't go wrong in this lovely little Cape Breton village.

This is the first in a series of introductory theme walkabouts hosted by the Baille Ard Trail Association, that will take place throughout the spring and summer months. Saturdays walk will be lead by Elsie Buck and Joe MacKinnon who will be introducing the trail system of the Baille Ard to those interested in all of the trails and how they are connected to each other. Other walkabouts during the year will introduce speakers examining the ecology of the system, birds and animals, trees and the undergrowth etc.
A good warm up for the Island Hoppers going to the afternoon walk in Baddeck.

The Cape Breton Island Hoppers Volkssport Club will be sponsoring the Annual 42KM Marathon Walk Event that is held in Nova Scotia at various locations throughout the province.
SATURDAY 12 September, 2009
Start now by working out for the event, Meet Joe and Elsie at the Cambridge Suites at 10 AM every Tuesday and Friday and every other Sunday at 2PM, when we do not have a scheduled walk event on our yearly calendar of events.
There will be various walk times and distances available for all participants.
We recognize that all members are not inclined to challenge themselves to the entire 42Km Event, therefore we have setup a program of various distances to allow all members to participate during the day.
The 42km Event Starts at 08:00 Hrs/8 AM, Registration ends at 09:00 Hrs/9 AM for the main walk event.
The Marathon Walkers will continue on a linear style walk (one way) to a finish line located approximately in or near Port Hood.
Support Vehicles will be available thru out the day along the trail.
Walkers who want to do 20 and 30 Km's are asked to register at 09:00 Hrs/9 AM until 10:00 Hrs/10 AM.
To achieve the 20 Km event participants will walk 10k in one direction and return to the Start Point for a total of 20 Km's and the 30 K will continue for 15 km's and return for a total of 30 km's.
Shorter Distances of 5, 10 and 15kms will start at the usual traditional CBIH time of 14:00 Hrs/2 PM and registration will begin at 13:30 Hrs/1:30 PM
The Walk Event will Start at the new Ceilidh Trail parking lot on Highway 19 in the Community of Troy.
The parking lot is on the west side of the Highway and is 1.4Km from the convenience store known as "Downtown Troy".
CBIH SIGNS WILL BE POSTED ON THE HIGHWAY AND AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE PARKING LOT.
A brochure on the walk Event and the evening dinner is available at all walk events or by email by request.
Registration forms for the dinner at the Hall in Judique are available with the "Marathon Brochure" and must be sent into the registrar by 23 August.
Come out and walk for Fun, Fitness and Friendship with your fellow club members and then enjoy a social evening of FOOD at the Judique hall.

celebration on our very Special Day-it really meant a lot to both of us!
Keith usually works away and has not been as fortunate as I, to have
made the wonderful friendships since joining this incredible group of
