A GREAT Day FOR WALKING

Sunday the 18 of April proved to be a wonderful day for walking along the North Sydney/ Sydney Mines Harbour area.
A bright sunny day with a cool breeze blowing off the ice in the harbour and the Newfounland ferry in the background made it a picture postcard walk event for the 22 Island Hoppers who participated in this event.
The Event was led by Robin Grant and Isabel ensured we kept on the right trail through the community of Sydney Mines.
Alan Paruch and his son Jonathan joined us for this event and are looking forward to joining us for our next event and we are pleased to welcome them to to our club and Volkssporting.

Our next Event is Sunday 2nd of May at 2:00pm in Big Pond, this is a 10 Km walk led by Elsie Buck and the sweep for the event will be Joe MacKinnon, if you have questions about the walk call them at 562-3117.

Take Hwy 4 to Big Pond, turn left at Glengarry Road approx. 1Km to "Rear Big Pond Road" and East Bay Hills.

What Colour IVV Record Book Should I Use??

The following article was originally submitted by Judy Everard of the DVC

Many members, especially the newer ones, find IVV Record Books rather confusing and don't really understand the various colours. Since another colour - RED - has recently been added, hopefully the following will simplify matters by giving a brief explanation of when to use the various books and at the same time answer many of your questions.
IVV Record Books are used to record both Distance and Events although not all members keep a record of both; some choose to record only one or the other.

The Distance Books come in Blue, Beige and Yellow and are used as follows:

BLUE - 500km increments up to 8000km (500 - 8000km)

BEIGE - 1000km increments up to 22,000km (9000km - 22,000km)

YELLOW - 3000km to bring your distance up to 25,000km and then 5000km increments thereafter.

The Event Books come in Green, Purple, Salmon and Red and should be used as follows:

GREEN - Your first book will record 10 events (5 on the "free sheet" and 5 in the book) and the next two books will each record 20 events for 30 and 50 events.

PURPLE - Increments of 25 events and used between 75 and 600 events. Thus, your first purple book will be for 75 events and will contain sanctions for event #51 to event #75.

SALMON - Increments of 50 events and used from 650 to 1500 events. Your first salmon
book will be 650 events and will contain sanctions for event #601 to event #650. This book looks like a "beige" colour but is officially referred to as "salmon".

RED - This is a relatively new book which records 100 events and used from 1600 onward. Thus, your first red book will be for 1600 events and will contain sanctions for event #1501 to event #1600.

There is also a Bicycle Distanc Book. Although it is permissable to enter the distance for a bicycle event in your regular distance book once per year, if you plan to participate in other bike events more often you should have a Bicycle Distance Book.

Regardless of which book you use, always remember that we walk for FUN, FITNESS & FRIENDSHIP!!!

Our First Walk for the Season!

On the 28 of March, 16 of our members braved the windy weather for our North Sydney Guided Walk Event, led by Robin Grant while Isabel looked after the back of the pack as our sweep.
Our newest member, Janice Wilson joined us for this event along with Joan Walsh, both have completed volksmarch events in Europe while there with the Canadian Armed Forces. Welcome to the club folks!
The TransCanada Trail was not readily accessible due to snow conditions, Robin scouted out a route around North Sydney which proved to be a great walk as all the sidewalks were clear of ice and snow and we were sheltered by the wind.

Check Your Schedule!

Our next EVENT is Sunday,18 April @ 1:00pm in Sydney Mines starting at Indian Beach near Rollie's Wharf

The Fortress and The Lighthouse are waiting and calling for you!

This message was sent out to our Friends in the Halifax Regional Area, there is some interesting information for all of our members as well.

The executive and members of The Cape Breton Island Hoppers Volkssport Club would like to extend to our friends at the Dartmouth Volksmarch Club and to all in the Atlantic Area an invitation to walk with us in the community of Louisbourg and the historical sites at Fortress Louisbourg.

We will begin our activities on Saturday, 21 August with a registration time of 12:30 at the Hans Beck Sea Products, Main Street, community of Louisbourg. The Lighthouse Walk Event will begin promptly at 1:00pm led by Anne and Phil Irons. There will be a BBQ and picnic after the walk at Simon’s Point; this is the picnic area along the route, with a wonderful view of the fortress and Louisbourg harbour.

For those who are interested in IVV stamps, this is a great opportunity to walk in the morning, as the YRE starts at Peck’s Store on Wolfe Street, get our YRE stamp for basically the same walk event, then receive a different IVV sanctioned stamp in the afternoon for almost the same walk. What a bargain, only $2.00 for each walk event! Traditionally at our BBQ we provide hot dogs, hamburgers and soft drinks for $1.00 each; complimentary coffee, tea, water and a juice with homemade sandwiches and sweets are available as well. All Books will be stamped after the Walk Event at the picnic site.

Early Sunday morning on the 22 August, registration will begin at 08:30am; the walk begins at 09:00am. The registration and Start Point will be near the Visitors Information Area, our CBIH banner and other signs will indicate our location and for those who have been on our fortress walks in the past, please do not go to the traditional Start Point, you must turn right into the fortress Visitors Information area. This adventure into the fortress will be unlike any we have done in the past, there will be other visitors roaming the streets of the fortress as well as costumed historical characters, cannon and musket firing, children dancing in the streets.

We will try to stay together as a group but once we enter the main portion of the fortress your excitement will soar and you will want to see everything that is going on all a once, but remember this is an all day affair, we will complete the walk and by prior arrangements the transit system located at the Visitors Centre will “beam us back in time “to the site. Brochures and visitors passes will be available to return and enjoy the day. Do to the inherit problems that will more then likely happen we will stamp your books as quickly as possible so that you can enjoy the rest of the day. Please note that there is no group dinner for this event, there is traditional style restaurants on site plus a souvenir shop.

A registration form for this great walking experience is available by contacting your executive or Rollie Coombes at 902-849-0747 or email: bretonhoppers@hotmail.com and please register before July 20th 2004.

Stay tuned for details on our newest project with the Celtic Colours International Music Festival and the 1st Annual Celtic Fall Colours Walk Events to be held between 8-16 Oct.2004.

GREAT NEWS ABOUT THE GLACE BAY YRE!

To All of our Volkssport friends I am very pleased to announce that the Cape Breton Island Hoppers Volkssport Club have a new friend and partner.

Tom Whiting of CO-OP Atlantic has agreed to allowing our club to use the Co-Op Gas Bar at 99 Reserve St. as our Start Point for our Year Round Event (YRE) in Glace Bay.

Starting the 15 March 2004

I have assured Tom that all Volkssporters using this facility, will respect the daily operations of the gas bar and will not be a hinderance to his staff and in fact will be contributing to the local economy/ tourist trade in our own modest way.

Any questions about the trail/walk the facilities, problems are to be directed to me and not the staff; we have had an excellent 6 year relationship with the Staff at Frasers Deli and I am sure it will be so at our new location.

New directions for the Start Point and a Brief Description of the trail can be found below:

GLACE BAY YRE-W CVF04/192 1/1/2004 - 12/31/2004 10, 12 km 2B

CO-OP Gas Bar

99 Reserve Street

Glace Bay, NS

[1] From the Trans Canada Highway (Route 105) take Exit 20E to Route 125, following the directions to Sydney, Louisbourg and Glace Bay.

[2] If coming from Rte 4, take Exit 6E onto Rte 125 [Sydney bypass, following signs to Glace Bay.

[3] Follow Exit 9E to the right [last Exit on Rte 125] onto Rte 4 and follow signs to Glace Bay.

[4] Rte 4 is a four lane hwy that narrows to two lanes through the community of Reserve Mines and enters Glace Bay as Reserve St.

[5] The CO-OP Gas Bar is located on the right handside of Reserve St., just before the Glace Bay Fire Hall.

[6] Please Park at the former CO-OP Store next door to the Gas Bar.

08:00 - 18:30 Ask for the Walk Box for self-registration and please use the picnic table outside to register and stamp your books.

[a] A moderately easy walk with few hills along the Glace Bay harbour, a wonderful view of the Atlantic Ocean, a walk through parks with a chance to see the Glace Bay Miners' [coal] Museum, contrasting with the new 'high tech' areas developing in this 'old town' and a new redeveloped downtown core.

[b] The alternate route has been discontinued. Walkers can still continue to get 12Kms by using the additional trail behind the Miners' Museums - a walk through the harbour area and along a coastal trail to 'Big Glace Bay Beach' and a bird sanctuary.

Cross-country skiing, snow shoes and walking!

On Sunday the 29th of February at 1:00 pm, we will be holding our second Event for 2004.

This will be the first time that we will use the new SK+ stamp in our Distance and Event Books.

Due to changing weather conditions the SK+ has been introduced for winter/spring Events,

If we had planned a snow shoe and xc-ski event and the weather turned mild, the snow melted etc, we can now continue with the Event as walkers as long as we use the same Start Point.

In the past we would have had to cancel or postpone the event, the only thing stopping us now is extreme weather or our inability to get off the couch.

Hope to see as many of you as possible at MIRA PROVINCIAL PARK located on the Brickyard Road off HWY 22.

After the Event, Shirley and Bill Boutilier will be hosting a Pot Luck at their home.

Follow Trout Brook Road to BenGeorge Road then onto Sherwood Drive.

Note: There were 10 members of the CBIH plus 57 members of the XC club at Ski Ben Eoin on the 15 Feb.
It was cold but fun and many thanks to Micheline, Jacques and Sinclair for organizing this event.
Thank You Martine for keeping the ten of us on the right track up the hill, down and up the hill.
The goal for the day was 1000kms, we finished at 837kms, a bit short but it was fun and we introduced our club to
potential new members when the snow has melted.

An observation or statement (the theory of walking with a group):

#1. I went out walking with you guys once and I thought you were walking too fast, I couldn't keep up, I felt embarassed and didn't go back again!

#2. I went out walking with your club, you walk too slow for me, I was walking on the heels of the guy in front, that's why I never went back!

Answer/my opinion:

The simplest answer I can give (but not a simple solution) or statement that can be made about this situation is that Volkssporting is a non-competitive sport, and maybe we should not use the word sport and emphaze the NON in "non-competitive".

We have adopted the IVV motto, "Walking for Fun, Fitness and Friendship", everyone who participates in our Events should and will be made welcomed no matter what your degree of fitness.

The Annual Schedule of Events details the Ratings for each Walk and I encourage everyone to make themselves aware of our rating system, which should help in determining if an event is suitable for you.

The schedule also takes us to different and wonderful parts of our Island, this is the "Fun" in the motto, exploring the trails and the scenery; the walking at any speed and the distance gives you the exercise or "Fitness" and while doing these two things you are conversing with a fellow walker who is enjoying the outdoors with you, therefore you are making a new "Friend".

Those of us who want to be power walkers, fast walkers can do so seven days a week, the CBIH schedule allows for only two or three Guided Events each month, surely we can slow down a bit once or twice a month and enjoy this beautiful Island with some very friendly people.

If this is not satisfying to the faster walker then consider selecting our higher rated events of 3 or more, remembering our events are 10kms or more or another suggestion is to prewalk the Event with the Walk Leader or become a Walk Leader, selecting trails for us, assisting the Trails Coordinator; other things you could do, try out our 5 Year Round Events (YRE's) on your own or with a friend.

To those of us who are slower but steady paced walkers, those who want to rest along the trail, DO NOT try to keep up with the person ahead of you, enjoy the walk, you are not competing with anyone, there is no blue ribbon at the end of the trail, you will have the satisfaction of knowing you completed the event and enjoyed the scenery around you and the friends along the trail.

The Trails Coordinator or a designated member is always at the rear as the 'sweep' to assist you if help is needed; these are called Guided Walks for that purpose and if a trail is fairly complicated it is usually marked with our signs or trail tape. A quote from Bill, "remember if you come to a fork in the road, Take It "!

Some of the other CVF and Atlantic Clubs have tried different approaches to this problem, (a) a fast group, (b) a slower group, (c) starting at different times for each group; none of these are real solutions nor is there a firm way to resolve this, other then to make all of our Walk Events, Volksmarches/Map Walks.

We would set up a Start Point, you would sign in, get a map of the walk and proceed on your own and ensure you get a stamp at a designated check point before receiving your Events and Distance Stamps.

Many of our U.S.A. and Euro. friends use this method for many of their Walk Events, the draw back is that you don't get to meet people, you are concerned about reading a map; a good point is you can run into a pub whenever you want to, if there's a pub available!

Folks! Lets get out and walk and have fun, enjoy the day, observe a waterfall in the forest, smell the roses along the way or the manure on the Trans Canada Trail.

If we have lost new or potentially new walkers due to the statements of #1 and #2 above, then it is up to you the members to help bring them back or introduce newer walkers to our foal.

It is ashame that we have lost people to our style of walking, we all have our own philosphy on how to approach this situation and I invite you to express your opinion in this forum, unedited except for offensive language.

Message From our Atlantic Director

ATLANTIC DIRECTOR’S REPORT

Sorry I missed you all on the 17th of January. However, we cannot predict the weather this time of year. In May of this year I accepted the position of Atlantic Region Director. To date it has been interesting, just a little bit of work but fun and I am sure it will be worthwhile.

In June the Vice President of CVF attended the AVA Biennial convention in Colorado Springs. With the help of clubs in the Atlantic Region I gathered varies pieces of information together and forwarded them to the convention site for him to have on hand to pass out to those interested in Volksmarches in Canada.. Our Blue Books, in particular went over well. I have had various requests about walking events in the Maritimes as well as notification that there are Volkssporting bus tours from the United States planning on visiting Atlantic Canada this year.

We have nine active clubs to date in Atlantic Canada:
÷ The newest of these clubs is the Fundy Volkssport Club in Saint John NB. They have taken over the year round and seasonal walk in Saint John from the Oromocto Club.
÷ The Oromocto Club has changed its name to the River Valley Trail Blazers.
÷ The Sou’wester Volkssport Club in Cornerbrook NF changed its name to Humber Valley Volkssport Club
÷ Unfortunately, the Moncton Club has stood down until such time as there is an interest in starting the club up again. The Moncton Year Round will still be there as a Director’s walk

Convention 2004 will be held in Vancouver, May 21,22 & 23. If anyone is interested in attending please get your registrations in. They have also planned post convention tours for those interest in seeing the area while it BC. There is a cruise to Alaska planned, a one day bus trip to Whistler and 5-day bus trip to Vancouver Island. If you require further information I’m sure your club president can help you.

Convention 2005 will be held in Quebec City, May 27,28 & 29. Anyone who attended the convention in Quebec in 1998 can agree that it was a great time and excellent convention. Mark your calendars and plan to attend.

By now your club has received copies of the Atlantic Region’s Guide to Year Rounds/ Seasonal Events and Guided Walks (Blue Book). The Atlantic Region has a wide variety of walks and events through out this year. There is a total of 163 scheduled walks, 42 year rounds/seasonal walks and one bike seasonal. Be sure to get a copy. Elizabeth Nifort, a Dartmouth Club member, goes to a lot of work each year to have this book made ready for print. Elizabeth does a great job on the book and we should all take the time to thank her for her work.

This year will be a busy year for the Acadian Festival and special events are being put on by various clubs in the Atlantic Region. Elinor Mahar has put a lot of work into the special walk schedule so let’s all make sure we get a copy of it and get out their and learn more about the Acadian Heritage, enjoy the walking and have fun.

The Fundy Volkssport Club also has a walk on the 19th of June. Champlain landed in Saint John on June 19, 1604. The club is planning a walk to coincide with the reenactment and parade put on by the city of Saint John. A separate brochure will be coming out on this.

Keep in mind for your 2005 calendar of events – the River Valley Trail Blazers (formerly the Oromocto Volkssport Club) will be celebrating their 20th Anniversary. They are making plans now for the weekend of July 1st – 4th to hold various walks around and through covered bridges in the Sussex area of New Brunswick complete with a dinner in a covered bridge.

The Valley Trekkers will be taking part in the Port Royal 400th Anniversay year in 2005. They are planning on doing 400 kms of walking in the Annapolis Valley over the year. Special awards will be made available to Volkssporters as they complete the various walks in the Annapolis Valley. A weekend of events will be held in Annapolis Royal and surrounding area the first weekend in August. 2005.
÷
I am planning on joining you for your walks in Cheticamp in June and Louisbourg in August, and who knows I might get down to Cape Breton for other events.

If I can be of any assistance at all to anyone of you please do not hesitate to contact me. If you have questions and I’m not sure of the answer I will definitely find out for you. I look forward to being the Atlantic Region Director for the next couple of years.

See you on the trails,

Lynda Kanne
Atlantic Region Director
Canadian Volkssport Federation

Something to Think About

by Heather McLeod
(Edited from the Central Nova News, published Jan. 2004 Vol. 10 No. 1)

In October, Rilla McLean, our CBIH wheelchair participant, made a presentation to the task force on the use of off-highway vehicles.
Although Rilla was not representing any group, the incident that sparked her presentation was the condition of the TCT on her volksmarch at Creignish (a rails-to-trails section) last June.
Members of the CBIH and the Central Nova (CNVC) attended this hike and can testify to the difficulties she encountered.
Rilla was a water carrier in May 2000 when the trail officially opened and was delighted to find a scenic wheelchair accessible and user-friendly trail close to home.
Even in the summer of 2002 she did not encounter problems. However, June 2003 was a quite different story as there were deep ruts, some filled with with loose gravel, and shoulders too narrow to navigate around the ruts.
it was not the standard of TCT walkers would expect for a rails-to-trails segment and families with bicycles or strollers would encounter the same problems as Rilla.
The majority of ATV drivers are friendly and courteous and wish to have a safe trail to ride on. Unfortunately, a minority do not exercise responsibility and are ruining the trail for other users.
It is something to think about.

Rilla is also involved with the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Canso Causeway and is promoting the idea of our club and others to walk across the causeway and continue with a 10km route possibley using the transCanada Trail towards Creignish, of course this is only in the planning stages and will be discussed by your walk committee.

Schedule of Events for 2003

Our scheduled Guided Walk Events (GW) have been completed for this year 2003, however we still have Five (5) year round events (YRE's) that you and a friend can do at your own pace and whenever you want before the end of this year. If you haven't stamped your Event and Distance Books for this year there's still plenty of time to do so, the weather is great for walking, the stamps are still in place at the different locations, so grab a friend and get some exercise before the snow arrives.

Where are The Start Points for the YRE's?

(1). Sydney, Cambridge Suites on the Esplanade, ask for the Walk Box at the Front Counter.

(2). Glace Bay, 364 York Street, Walk Box is located at the top of step, Front Entrance.

(3). Louisbourg, Pecks Store, Wolfe Street, Walk Box is Located in the store near the videos.

(4). North Sydney, Clansmen Motel, Peppett Street, Walk box is at the Motel registration desk.

(5). Baddeck, Telegraph House B&B/Motel Chebucto Street, ask for the Walk Box at the registration desk.

If you have any questions on these events please do not hesitate to contact Rollie or the Points of Contact for each event. The clerks and cashiers at the SP(s) are not responsible for these events; The oweners of the venues have kindly provided the space at no charge to our organization.

Webspace and Links:

The CBRM will be providing us with some space on there site very shortly, hopefully this will give us more exposure to the community.

McKeigan Rd/Mira Public Pastures

A nice sunny fall day with a cool wind at our backs proved to be a very successful walkabout for our last GW for 2003. There were 27 walkers on this event, three of our newest members came along for the walk and all indications are that they will be back. They were very excited about our awards program and the Mira Pastures were a great introduction to volkssporting.
The end of the trail at Mira Pastures and the walk up the hill to the doppler radar site have a wonderful view of the Mira area, again it proves that while driving in your car across our Island, you miss some of the best areas of Cape Breton.

SNOW ON THE TRAIL!!!

What more could you ask for but snow on a cross country ski trail; the happiest people on the trail were Jacques, Micheline and Sinclair as we headed out on to the trails at Ski Ben Eoin for a 10Km walking tour of the different xc trails.
Jacques Cote our Walk Leader (in this case our Task Master) ensured that we started the walk at 13:00h (1:00pm) as per Volkssport rules; Micheline and Sinclair took turns at the rear to make sure we all kept up and didn't go astray on the numerous trails.
We followed the trail up the East Bay Hills, a steady, slightly challenging climb that culminated with several good views of the Bra D'or Lakes. We were introduced to a maple tree named after Sinclair and the Ski Ben Eoin volunteers showed us the new trails they were planning and the ongoing maintenance that was and is required to keep the trail a viable and worthwhile endeavor for xc-sking and snowshoeing enthusiasts.
There was a total of 24 walkers on this event and after the walk we were given the use of the ski chalet where our members brought out a birthday cake!! Thank You fellow walkers, it was very much appreciated.

The walk at Ski Ben Eoin was a great success due to the efforts of Jacques, Micheline, Sinclair and all of you who paricipated in this event.

We continue to grow as a club due to the enthusiasim of all our members, bring a friend along on our next event:

Sunday, 16 November @ 1:00pm, McKeigan Rd/Mira Pastures in Marion Bridge.

Dartmouth Volksmarch Club

Grand River Falls Walk Event!

A cool but sunny day at Grand River Falls, where 20 of our regular members plus 5 new walkers joined us for an 11Km stroll along the Loch Lomond Road and then down a narrow trail to the Grand River Falls and Fish Ladder.
The falls here are more like rapids but very narrow and fast moving; you can hear the sounds of the water as you descend the hill.
This was a great introduction to our newest members, all of whom have indicated that they will be returning for our next walk at Ski Ben Eoin trails on the 9th of November, starting time 1.00pm.

What is a YRE (Year Round Event)?

The locations of our YRE's can be found on our WebSite: CBIH

At each location our members have walked, driven, used local maps and have tried to pick out the most desireable locations, streets and parks within the selected communities that we and visiting volkssporters would appreciate as walkers. Most of our walk events are limited to 10Kms. Many volksmarchers/volkswalkers plan their vacations around these events on their own or by bus tours that specialize in hiking and walking tour groups. ie: Walking Adventures International, Tater Tours and Aquilla Tours.

A YRE can be walked at anytime during daylight hours and on any day of the week, anytime of the year except Christmas Day and in some cases on New Years Day.

You can walk these events on your own, with a walk partenner or a walk group, ie: bus tours.

A 'Walk Box' supplied by the club is located at each venue, ie: motel, general store; information about the event is found in the box such as maps and directions, a registration log and envelopes. Most importantly the CVF Sanctioned Stamp, that you place in your Distance and Event Books upon completion of the walk.

Ensure that you register and fillout the information on the envelope.

A $2.00 donation to cover the cost of the Event is requested by the club and most Volkssport Clubs ask the same.

CBIH has a frequent walker rate for club members only; after walking the event and submitting $2.00 for the first event, members can then pay $1.00 each time they participate in that particuliar Event between 01 Jan to 30 June.
On or about 01 July the contact person for each YRE is responsible to remove the + sign (2003+) from the stamp, all members who are frequent walkers then pay $2.00 again for the event and therafter $1.00 for the remainder of the year.

You may stamp your Distance Book with the same stamp as frequently as you walk that particular YRE, however you can only place the same stamp in the EVENT BOOK only twice, once with the plus + sign (2003+), once without (2003)

Need more info or clarification please contact me at: bretonhoppers@hotmail.ca
