CRUISE SHIPS & CVF WALK PROGRAM CBIH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

777f46e62335e2adacb16d52aaca49af

Cruise Ship News:

"It was wonderful to combine the cruise and a walking vacation."

"Dock and Walk"

The Canadian Volkssport Federation's Dock and Walk Program is becoming very popular amongst volkssporters who would like to participate in walking events at ports of call where local clubs have a permanent or Year Round Events (YRE's). These walk events are usually within a reasonable walking distance from where the cruise ship has docked. Depending on the port the walk can start and finish immediately at the dock, as in the case of the Sydney program.

The Cape Breton Island Hoppers sponsor a "Dock & Walk" program for cruise passengers who just happen to be volkssporters as well.

During this past cruise season we have had several individuals and couples participate in our CVF- 59, Sydney YRE.

Passengers (walkers) wanting to to do a walk event in Sydney or any port where there is a walk event must contact the participating club before arriving in port.

The club will provide, (usually by email/attachments) walk directions for the event and registration/sign in forms.

Once the participants depart the ship (Joan Harris Pavilion/"the big fiddle area") at the port, they proceed on the walk event. First, taking in the boardwalk and then proceeding through Wentworth Park, Baille Ard Trail, downtown Sydney and the historical North end of the city. On this self-guided tour they return to the ship at their own time and pace and possibly seeing more of the city then other regular tourist from the same ship.

Recently one of the very last cruise ships to arrive in Sydney at the end of October had some passengers from the New York and New Jersey area aboard. Some of these folks arrived back home to find their neighborhoods in devastation after Hurricane Sandy.

However our New Jersey walker Kathy was spared the worst of the storm and the following is excerpts from our emails:

Hello,
We walked this YRE (
Sydney) ........  We really enjoyed the walk. A lovely city and the weather was perfect!
Thank you
Kathy O'Hagan
POC Atlantic City, Cape May and Titusville, NJ

Hello Kathy,

I was very pleased to know that the weather was good when you did the Sydney YRE as we have had a spell of rain since early September.

We here in Cape Breton had been spared the major effects of hurricane "Sandy", however I noticed you are from New Jersey area! Hope everything is OK with you folks; the photos and newscast from New York and the Jersey shore area are almost unbelievable. Please take care and hope that you can visit us again. Roland

Kathy wrote>>>Thank you, Roland.  We are fine here in NJ, although, we are now in throes of a N'easter with rain, snow and wind.  We live outside of Atlantic City and were very fortunate. We hope to get out this week and see if our walks are still in place.  Princeton Area Walkers put all of our walks on hold as many are on the coast and in NYC.  I hope to get out this weekend and check out Atlantic City, Cape May and some others.
I ....look forward to a future visit. It was our first time up there and enjoyed the walks.  A very nice city. I was pleasantly surprised with the Maritimes!  Thanks for your help in starting at the pier. It was wonderful to combine the cruise and a walking vacation.
Happy Trails!
Kathy

WALKING A LINKS GOLF COURSE - CABOT LINKS

INVERNESS BEACH - TRANS CANADA TRAIL - A LINKS GOLF COURSE

DSCF0604

CABOT LINKS GOLF COURSE - A TRUE LINKS COURSE

NO GOLF CARTS ALLOWED HERE!!

Volkssporters are always looking for that special unique walking trail

The Cape Breton Island Hoppers Volkssport Club had that unique experience as we strolled along the edge of the Cabot Links Golf Course, and the Inverness Beach, located in the Community of Inverness, Inverness County.

The website  http://cabotlinks.com/golf will give you a better description of a "links golf course". Golfers, who are interested in experiencing a unique challenge should consider this course on their "bucket list".

This is indeed a remarkable experience and an exciting change within this former coal mining community then from our previous walk event here over the years.

The Inverness Beach as always is a wonderful place to walk, plus the Trans Canada Trail System (Inverness Shean Trail) and the added feature of a new golf course has made the volkssport event here to be a very special place to walk.

The trail portion of our walk event along the old railway bed proved to be a very interesting excursion as well when we came across what looked like a small abandoned locomotive.

DSCF0613  This is in fact an outdoor furnace!! this heats the three storey home located in the background.

Special thanks to Janice and Norm Johnson who took the time to search out this walk event. A great walk!

More photos of the event can be found on our Photo gallery section.

CHALLENGE WALK - MONEY POINT TRAIL

MONEY POINT TRAIL 30 SEPTEMBER 2012

A Very special thank you to our walk leaders Diane and Bruce Clark for this very special annual event and locating this new, to us trail. Great job folks and thanks to all those members who had taken up the challenge to walk for the fun of it. You did it!

Not a promising beginning as the road and trail was washing out beneath us before we even started to walk

START POINT - BAY ST LAWRENCE

The CBIH Annual Challenge Walk Event takes place at the end of September or early October. This years event proved to be a definite challenging in several ways, not only did we traverse the mountain going to "Money Point" but we were also challenged by the adverse weather conditions of heavy rain, and thick fog, and at times we would have difficulty in seeing the end of the group in the fog, that rolled in across the barrens and cliffs off Money Point.

"MONEY POINT" the highlight and turn around for our 13 K Guided Walk. Out there somewhere  is the sea and St Paul's Island!

The walk leaders Diane and Bruce Clark, led this years group walk to "Money Point Trail", an open barren cape jutting out into the sea with fantastic views (when there is no fog). Money Point Trail should not to be confused with our previous events over the years to the former "Money Point Lighthouse".

SPECIAL WALK EVENT ON THE MONEY POINT TRAIL

The Annual Club Challenge Walk Event.

Many of us have been walking and preparing all summer at our club walk events and on our own.

Now is the time to put all of that energy into one of our most favorite but challenging events on the annual schedule.

The Bay St Lawrence Money Point area is just such a trail

Details of the event to be held Sunday 30 September, 11:30am Registration, 12noon walk time, can be found on the website page

http://www.capebretonislandhoppers.com/event.cfm?eid=686

For further details contact the walk leaders Diane and Bruce Clark as per the website

Please find below a trip calculator for Nova Scotia/Cape Breton Island to assist you in determining distance and time:

http://www.novascotia.com/en/home/planyourtrip/distancecalculator.aspx

Our club president Elsie Buck and past president Joe MacKinnon will offer a less challenging walk event starting at the same Start Point location.

The walk through the Village of Bay St Lawrence and a portion of the Money Point Trail will offer a very scenic route for those who have not been to this area before but would like to participate in our usual Sunday walk event.

CB ISLAND HOPPERS VOLKSSPORT CLUB 15 YEARS OF FUN, FITNESS AND FRIENDSHIP

DSCF0581
Sunday 16 September, 2012
Above:Elsie Buck President of CBIH and Sue Banks CVF Atlantic Director cut the 15th Anniversary cake at Ferrymen's Community Hall in Grand Narrows
DSCF0579
Above: CBIH members Pam MacGillivray, Dianna MacDonald, President Elsie Buck and Joe MacHoll advising Elsie on how to divide up the cake!
Sunday morning did not look very promising as to be a day of walking in the sunshine on Cape Breton Island. many of us driving from Sydney and Glace Bay drove through heavy torrential rain before reaching Iona and the Highland Village Museum.
Iona was cloudy and misty on arrival but by the time the morning walk began there were clear skies and the Bra d' or Lakes had an almost smooth glass finish except for the wake made by the 2 sailing ships that could be seen in the distance from the top of the hill in the Highland Village area. A picture perfect morning walk that had taken us from the museum and then across the Grand Narrows Bridge. During the walk event we were able to watch the boats enter the draw bridge and continue their journey beyond the shores of Cape Breton. A very unique part of the morning walk was the stroll through the pathways at the Highland Village Museum and the great views from atop the hill overlooking Grand Narrows and the Bra d' or Lakes.
Overall a great walk event lead by our club president Elsie Buck and many thanks to the staff and management of the Highland Village Museum in Iona, the heart of Cape Breton Island.
Many of our members had brought a picnic lunch with them and enjoyed the picnic area at Grand Narrows but a cool breeze off the lakes soon had us enjoying the hospitality of the Grand Narrows Ferrymen's Hall Association.
The afternoon stroll literally started in the hall and we were once again off on a 5 and 10 walk event along the shores of the Bra d' or Lakes heading for Derby Point Beach. A fairly easy walk with a few hills that gave us another perspective of the lakes and views of the Iona Highland Village and the church high on the hill. The beach at Derby Point was the highlight of the event and some of the members waded into the waters to cool off their feet.
Upon returning to Grand Narrows a BBQ event was catered by the Grand Narrows Development Association where members enjoyed Beef and Veggie burgers with an excellent salad and cold drinks, anniversary cake and optional ice cream topping! "Personally I did not lose weight after 20 km of walking, I wonder why?"
Our visitors from Germany and mainland Nova Scotia seemed to be very pleased with the days walk events and the beauty of this part of Cape Breton, hopefully we have sent them home with fond memories of our island and wish them a safe trip home and ask "will ye no come back again to our fair isle" at the end of the continent!
More pictures of our day can be seen on our photo section.http://cbislandtrailphotos.blogspot.ca/

CLUB MEETING - 2013 SCHEDULE OF WALK EVENTS

CLUB MEETING:
It’s that time of the year when we begin planning for the next season (2013) of walk events.

Please join us at the

McConnell Library, 50 Falmouth Street, Sydney B1P 6X9

Time: 6:30pm, Tuesday 10 July 2012

This is your chance to help the walk committee to develop the “Schedule of Walk Events” for 2013.
Come out to the scheduling meeting with some new suggestions of where we should walk and it would be very helpful if you have already walked the suggested trail and know the address of the Start Point, especially the Postal Code that is required for all CVF walk Start Points. This is to help out any visitors to the island.
Even if you do not have any suggestions at this time, why not drop in anyway and find out how we go about working out an “Annual Schedule of Events”
Remember our mandate is to walk in all four counties of Cape Breton Island at least once each year.
We walk on most trails and countries roads that are reasonably accessible to all of our club members.
The CBIH sponsor 5 permanent or Year Round Walk Events that we insert into the schedule at various times of the year.
Walk events are 10k or more routes with a possibility of a 5k for those persons who require a shorter distance. Shorter routes are not to be less then 5k however these can be increased to 7k depending on the terrain etc.
Please take sometime to read the CVF Trail Rating system and once the paper work is completed it’s all about Fun, Fitness and Friendship!

FAQ:
Why is the CBIH schedule of events prepared and completed so early and/or so far in advance?
Answer:
We have an International and National obligated deadline to meet; this is the responsibility and procedure that must be followed when you are affiliated with the (IVV) International Federation of Sports and the (CVF) Canadian Volkssport Federation. Our walk events are published online with both organizations, and in the “World Book of Walking”; this is published annually in January, hence the reason(s) to prepare early.

LOUISBOURG300 WALK EVENTS

Members CB Island Hoppers,
We are getting ready for 2013 and a very special year of walking for the fun of it!

As many of you already know we must begin now to produce a schedule for the following year to ensure our walk events are published in the "World Book of Walking". This book is published and ready for 1 January each year and in this case for the 2013 walk events.

To ensure we meet this deadline and especially for the very special program that has been developed by our club for next year;
The club president Elsie Buck and Rollie have taken on a project to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the founding of Fortress Louisbourg.

Organizations such as ours had been invited to produce a program of celebration for this anniversary.
The National Historic site has been very helpful in this regard and they are pleased with the program we have developed.

Other members of our club such as Dianna MacDonald, Barbara Thistle and Cal Thistle have contributed their time and resources to ensure we will have a Luncheon, Picnic and a Meet and Greet during this long weekend of walking.
Our club treasurer Lucy Nardini will be registering our dinner guests etc.

Other members have been asked to be walk leaders, sweeps. If you would like to help out during the weekend please contact Elsie.
Please help your club to make this a successful weekend by joining your friends on the walk events and coming out to the dinner, picnic, luncheon, Meet and Greet or at least to one or more of the events.

The long weekend of 28 June - 01 July 2013 has been set aside for this walk adventure in and around Fortress Louisbourg.
Due to the many other programs at the Fortress we had to make this our special weekend at the historical site.

Very shortly we will begin to advertise these walk events to the remainder of the Canadian Volkssport Federation and to our friends in the USA and across Europe. We want you the club members to be informed before these events are published in the CVF VOLKSSPORT Newsletter.

The remainder of the schedule for the same year is still being worked on and if you have walked a new trail that you want to introduce the club too, then please come forward with the details and the walk committee will place this on the schedule for the year. We are always in need for new walk leaders! We need you the members to come up with trails and walks as well.

2013 will also be the CBIH's turn to host the 42k Marathon event, so the above walks will be a good practice as we will put on about 52k for the weekend.

Please find attached three (3) .pdf's, brochures and an explanation of what the Island Hoppers will be doing for the Louisbourg300 celebrations.
Brochures can be sent in .rtf (rich text file) if needed

At a later date the brochure will be available at all walk events.

Thank You for your support!

Come join the CBIH in North Sydney on Sunday 10 June, 2012 (10:00am) for a walk in support of the CB Diabetic Society. Throughout the year we are overwhelmed by many groups wanting us to support their special cause by joining them for a fund raising walk. This year we will ask your support to walk with the local Cape Breton Diabetes Society.

For those members who give in other ways throughout the year to their own special causes please consider this as our normal weekly walk event, it is simply starting at the Civic Centre along our regular walk route.
The CB Diabetes Society is also looking for used clothing to help support this cause.

CBIH members will continue to do the regular 5 and 10k walk event in North Sydney and the general public is invited to walk along with us as well. However the track next to the Civic Centre is available to those non-members who feel they are not up to a longer walk event.
